$50 Million Stronger

December 2, 2015 will go down as a milestone in the history of Toronto East – both the hospital and the community – thanks to a historic gift of $50 million from Myron and Berna Garron.

Foundation Chair Michael Burns said, “We are humbled and beyond grateful for this remarkable and historic gesture. This is the largest gift ever given to a Canadian community hospital. It will help the patients in our hospital as we launch ourselves on the global stage, and will recognize the Garrons’ son, Michael.”

In honour of the gift, the main hospital site at 825 Coxwell Avenue became the Michael Garron Hospital, a proud member of the Toronto East Health Network.

Hospital President & CEO Sarah Downey said, “This occasion is a turning point, with an investment both in our hospital and our community. The gift will be a timeless one, benefiting patients through the generations to come.”

She also thanked the Garron family and expressed “our pride that you are entrusting us with your son’s name. We will honour him forever.”

Myron Garron spoke on behalf of the members of his extended family and friends who gathered for the occasion, “I remember being here when Michael was born. The doctor came out with this tiny bundle and introduced me to my son – Michael Albert Garron. We are proud to honour his name.”

Over 100 members of the hospital community: staff, physicians, volunteers, community partners and other dignitaries, joined in giving a heartfelt thanks to the Garron family for their generosity. More staff, physicians and volunteers watched the proceedings live in the cafeteria.

Michael was born in 1961 at the hospital. He died at 13 of a rare soft tissue cancer.
